The Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), Mysore - a pioneer in the sphere of Distance Education in India. Karnataka State Open University is well-known for imparting quality education for all without any physical boundaries. Karnataka State Open University plays a significant role in promoting the desired growth of higher education through Open-distance learning system (ODL).The University having a strong genesis of the Institute of Correspondence Course and Continuing Course and Continuing Education (ICC&CE), a pioneer in the Asian continent, was established in 1996 under the state enactment - KSOU Act 1992.

Established on 23rd November, 1949, it is the oldest and biggest university of the State. During the course of its life of more than five decades, the University has seen the establishment of seven more Universities which were carved out of the jurisdiction of the Gujarat University, viz., Sardar Patel University, Saurashtra University, Bhavnagar University, South Gujarat University, Gujarat Ayurveda University, Gujarat Agricultural University and North Gujarat University.Even then, the Gujarat University is the largest university in the state catering to the needs of higher education of more than two lakh students scattered over 235 colleges, 15 recognised institutions and 24 approved institutions. There are 34 Post-Graduate University departments and 221 P.G. Centres. It is the most preferred university among students for professional courses. It also has highest enrollment of students in the undergraduate and post graduate courses in the State. Gujarat University is engaged in various Post Graduate Programmes at the University Departments apart from the regular Courses taught in the pure subjects. These programmes are interdisciplinary in nature and looking at the present needs of the students and the job prospects at the regional and national level.

A need was recognized by a few enlightened sons of the soil of North Gujarat to bring the modern and higher education within easy reach of the young generation of the land for economic, social and cultural upliftment aimed at improving the quality of life in totality. The recognition of this need led to the formation of a dream. The dream charted out of a collective vision and pragmatic direction to build a world class educational complex with multiple purposes to provide various social organizations and individuals an opportunity to come forward and repay their debt to the society by 'investing' a small fraction of their prosperity for the multifold return to the generations next. A pioneering team of philanthropic and enlightened individuals led by Shri Anilbhai Patel and like-minded friends, soon came forward with the resolve to transform this dream, through Herculean efforts and committed dedication, into reality. Very soon the Team was joined by a large number of people, big and small, from diverse walks of life, to share the thrill and responsibility of building up the edifice of a huge academic campus in North Gujarat -Ganpat Vidyanagar, now the Ganpat University established under Gujarat state Act No. 19 of 2005.
